Roelof began his racing career in a Simca in 1970, before progressing to Formula Ford and winning the Dutch championship in 1972. With the benefit of strong sponsorship from HB alarm systems, Wunderink rushed through Formula 3 and F5000 during the next two seasons, and found himself in a works-backed Ensign for 1975 without showing anything like the form to justify such a chance.

Nevertheless, he bravely got on with the job, hampered at first by having to make do with the 74 car and then being sidelined with a broken cheekbone and concussion after a testing accident in an F5000 car. At the end of the season, having tried but failed, the quiet Dutchman stepped out of the racing limelight.
