A chartered accountant by profession, Murray enthusiastically raced an ERA and then a 4CLT Maserati in British and Continental events, as well as taking in occasional rallies and hill-climbs.

He is perhaps best known, however, as the man who formed the famous Ecurie Ecosse team in 1952. After taking part in the British GP with the organisation's Cooper-Bristol, Murray then took on the chief management role in the team, masterminding their hugely successful sports car programme which culminated in the dark blue cars' wonderful triumphs at Le Mans in 1956 and 1957.
