Within a couple of months in the summer of 1952, Niedermayr surely experienced the high and low points of his career. At the end of June he shared the second-place Mercedes Benz 300SL with Helfrich at Le Mans, and at the beginning of August he crashed into the crowd at the Grenzlandring circuit killing at least 13 spectators and injuring many others.

Helmut eventually returned to the track, appearing briefly in Hans Klenk's special in the 1954 AVUS GP, and thereafter was seen in a Porsche in rallies and sports car events.
