This wealthy Spanish businessman could afford to indulge his passion whenever he pleased, though he was really only competing regularly between 1956 - when he initially became part of the Maserati works team on the understanding that his car could be taken if needed by a more senior driver - and 1958, when he entered the car himself after the factory's closure. Not one to risk his neck unduly, he gained placings in races of high attrition, as when he finished fourth in the German and Italian GPs of 1956.
Perhaps the most fascinating feature of his long but intermittent career - which spanned more than twenty years - was its variety: in 1949 he raced a vintage Delage to fourth place at Le Mans; he made his GP debut in a Maserati 4CLT in 1951; and by the time his racing days were drawing to a close in 1969, he was handling machines such as the Ford GT40 and Porsche 908 Spyder.
