A man of a quiet and retiring disposition, J G 'Joe' Fry was a sprint and hill-climb specialist who developed his own lightweight specials. In 1949 he broke Raymond Mays' record at Shelsley Walsh, and his sprint machine was one of the fastest in the country regardless of engine capacity. In its 1950 guise, the rear-engined 'Freikaiserwagen' was fitted with a potent twin-cylinder Blackburn air-cooled engine with two-stage supercharging, but in a minor meeting at Blandford Camp, in Dorset, Fry lost control of the machine on a fast bend and crashed with fatal results. Just a few weeks earlier he had shared a Maserati with Shawe-Taylor in the British Grand Prix.
