A company director who began racing a Maserati before the war, Hampshire found his principal successes between 1947 and 1949 driving an ERA. He finished second in the British Empire Trophy on the Isle of Man in 1948, and shared the car with band leader Billy Cotton to take fourth place in the British GP in 1949.
The ERA was getting long in the tooth, and Hampshire was glad to take the opportunity to drive Reg Parnell's Scuderia Ambrosiana semi-works Maserati at a couple of Grands Prix.
He raced the car again in 1951, as well as wheeling out his venerable ERA for few minor outings. Also that year he shared a works Aston Martin DB2 with Reg Parnell, the pair finishing seventh. Hampshire raced little thereafter.
He reappeared in 1955 for a couple of outings in a Lister-Bristol, taking ninth (and class win) with Scott-Russell in the BARC 9-hour race at Goodwood.
