Racing enthusiast Crossley ordered the second Alta (GP2) from Geoffrey Taylor and upon delivery took it to compete in the 1949 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. This may have seemed an ambitious step for someone with only a little pre-war experience in a Riley, but wisely he took things easily and finished seventh.
He made occasional appearances with the car over the next couple of years, picking up sixth place in the Jersey Road Race in 1950. It seems he was unhappy with the costs of running and maintaining this machine, and dropped out of the racing scene, apart from a brief reappearance in 1955, when his home-made Berkshire Special appeared at the Goodwood Easter meeting. The car performed so poorly it was immediately withdrawn and never raced again.
