A wealthy Italian aristocrat, Rol was a gentleman racer who made more of a mark in sports cars than in single-seater competition. Equipped with a special short-chassis Alfa Romeo coupe, he tackled the classic road races in the late forties. In 1948 he led the Giro de Sicilia before retiring, but fared better the following season, finishing second in class. The same year Franco took a splendid third in the Mille Miglia.
In 1950 he joined up with Chiron to race in the Plate Maseratis, which were by then well past their best, but he did manage a fifth place in the San Marino GP at Ospedaletti. Rol's next chance to sample a monoposto came at the end of the next season at Monza with the newly built OSCA. It was hopelessly outclassed on its debut but, undaunted, he reappeared with the car at the beginning of 1952 in the Valentine GP, where it expired with a blown gasket.
Franco was included in an expanded works Maserati driver line-up for the 1952 Italian GP, but his car failed on the 24th lap. Rol's racing career was brought to an end after he suffered serious injuries while competing in the 1953 Tour of Sicily.
