Pietsch was a notable pre-war driver who, after success aplenty in hill-climbs from the early thirties with an Alfa Romeo 'Monza', was invited to join the Auto Union team in 1935. He did not get many opportunities to race, but shared the third-place car in the 1935 Italian GP with Rosemeyer, before branching out on his own with a Maserati, with which he led the 1939 German GP until plug trouble dropped him to third.
After the war Pietsch concentrated on building up his thriving publishing business, but he found time to race a Maserati and a Veritas, winning the Eifelrennen in the latter in 1951.
He was given a works Alfa Romeo for that year's German GP, but crashed heavily in the race when lying fifth, escaping injury, and after another serious accident at AVUS the following year Pietsch decided to quit for good.
