A garage proprietor from Gloucestershire, Shawe-Taylor gained some success before the war, winning the 1939 Nuffield Trophy, and after the hostilities he reappeared with a B-Type ERA. When his entry for the 1950 British GP was refused on the grounds that his car was too old, he shared Joe Fry's Maserati instead. He was developing a reputation as a very quick driver, and in 1951 he practised Tony Vandervell's Ferrari at Reims, but in the event Parnell raced the car after his BRM failed to show.
Having scored some good placings with the ERA at Goodwood (second in both the Richmond Trophy and the Chichester Cup), Brian was granted an entry for the British GP, and succeeded in finishing eighth, the first privateer home. He shared a works Aston Martin with Abecassis at Le Mans and finished fifth, before his progress was halted by an accident in the Daily Graphic Trophy at Goodwood, when he spun the ERA and was hit by Branca's car. Seriously injured, this promising driver recovered, but never raced again.
