This ex-Gilera motor cycle racer's career prospects on four wheels were spoilt by a very serious accident in the 1947 Comminges GP when the steering column failed on his Maserati. It put him out of action for some time, and he was never quite the same prospect subsequently.
Joining Ferrari for 1950, Serafini shared the second-place Ferrari with Ascari in his only Grand Prix start, and took a number of other second places - notably at Pedralbes, in the F1 car, and in the Eva Peron Cup race at Buenos Aires and the Circuit of Garda with the F2 T166.
It was much the same story in 1951 with second places again in both the Syracuse and San Remo GPs, before another big accident - this time in the Mille Miglia - left him with a broken arm and leg. Thereafter Dorino raced less frequently but he returned to contest the 1954 Brescia-Rome-Brescia classic, taking seventh place overall and first in the GT class with his Lancia.
